ADL to honor Joel Karp

Community leader Joel Karp of the New Haven area is the recipient of the Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) 2012 Greater New Haven Torch of Liberty Award.  Karp will be receive the award at a reception on Thursday, May 24.
“Joel Karp has been a committed and exemplary leader in the Jewish community and beyond in New Haven,” said Douglas Skalka, ADL’s New Haven chair.  “His dedication to the ideals of ADL, to serving others, and to helping those in need is clear.  We are delighted to recognize his leadership at this year’s Torch of Liberty reception.”
In 2009, Karp was selected a “Mover & Shaker” by the Connecticut Jewish Ledger. Among his roles as a community leader, he is a former president of both the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven and Camp Laurelwood in Madison, and a former vice-president of Ezra Academy in Woodbridge. As chairman of the Ezra Building Committee, he spearheaded the effort to develop the addition to Congregation B’nai Jacob in Woodbridge. Karp was also a member of the committee responsible for successfully merging the Jewish Community Center of Greater New Haven into the Federation.
The Torch of Liberty Award is presented annually to outstanding citizens whose extraordinary work has helped to strengthen the Greater New Haven Community.
Co-chairs of the May 24 event include several leaders of the New Haven community, including: Andrew Eder, Susan Birke-Fiedler, Dr. Alvin Greenberg, Marvin Lender, Boris Mizhen, Chris O’Connor, Sydney Perry, Ron Shaw, and Mark Sklarz.
