Dr. Leon Fischer, 94, died at home in Vina Del Mar, Chile on Jan. 26, 2012. He is survived by Teresa, his wife of 68 years, children: Dr. Nathan R. Fischer (Harriet Dobin), Bloomfield, Dr. Sylvia (Eduardo) Weinstein, Vina Del Mar, Julio (Marisol) Fischer of Santiago, and sister Violeta Berdichevsky, Santiago. Beloved grandfather of 20 and great-grandfather of 14 in Chile, Israel, Singapore and U.S.A., including: Geraldine, Seth, Stella and Max Bleiweis; Dr. Jonathan, Gabrielle and Noah Fischer; Shira, Josh and Ruby Cohen; David, Rachel, Alexander and Avi Dobin. Born in Odessa, he was the oldest of six and emigrated to Chile via Buenos Aires at age 9. At age 22, he graduated from the University of Chile School of Medicine. He became a distinguished surgeon and professor of ear nose and throat at his alma mater. He was chief of service, ENT – Head & Neck Surgery (Otolaryngology) at San Borja Arriaran Hospital, Santiago. As president of the Tabancura Lions Club of Santiago, Dr. Fischer pioneered and directed the Chilean hearing aid project for the International Lions Club. He assisted those financially in need of medical care, distributing thousands of donated hearing aids throughout Chile. Burial and shiva were held in Santiago, Chile, Circulo Israelita de Santiago. A memorial gathering will be held Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012, 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., with minyan service at 5:30 p.m., at the home of Dr. Nathan and Harriet Fischer, 3 Benton Drive, Bloomfield, CT.
