Hartford’s Jewish Historical Society marks 40 years

On Sunday, Oct. 30, the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Hartford will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a gala dinner to be held at Beth El Temple in West Hartford.  Highlights of the evening, which will begin at 5 p.m. with cocktails and will be emceed by Channel 30 news anchor Gerry Brooks, will include a short film history of the Society, a new exhibit on the life of lightweight boxing champion, Louis “Kid” Kaplan, and entertainment by Magevet, Yale University’s Jewish a capella  singers. In addition, the Society will honor past leadership and pay tribute to three long-time volunteers—Gloria Bein, David Klau, and Lillian Marlow.
The Jewish Historical Society of Greater Hartford was founded in 1971 by a group of individuals who recognized the significance of Hartford’s Jewish history and were concerned that it would be forgotten or lost without careful and thoughtful preservation.  Today, the Society seeks to educate and enlighten the community through its extensive collection of historical documents, photographs and memorabilia, as well as its host of workshops, lectures, trips, exhibits, and publications.  In addition, the Society serves as a valuable resource to students, scholars, and community members who tap into its archives and avail themselves of the expertise of its trained staff for purposes of personal or academic research.
