Teens named Scholar Athletes

Brian Hughes of Manchester and Melissa McCann of Rockville

Melissa McCann of Rockville and Brian Hughes of Manchester, both members of Temple Beth Hillel, in South Windsor, have been named Scholar Athletes of their high schools.  The teens were recognized for their achievement at a ceremony held at the Aqua Turf in Southington on May 1.
A 2011 graduate of Rockville High School, McCann served as vice president of her class and student council and was a member of the marching and symphony bands. She played varsity soccer and basketball throughout her high school career and was captain of the varsity basketball team.  A member of the National Honor Society, she was also a member of the World Language Honor Society.  McCann has been active in her synagogue as a madricha – group leader – and serves as a Hebrew tutor.  She plans to attend Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., as a Balfour Scholar, in the fall.
Brian Hughes was salutatorian of Manchester High School at his 2011 graduation.  Captain of his high school swim team for two years, he also served as vice president of the math team and treasurer of the Honor Society.  Hughes attends East of the River Yachad Jewish High School and represents Temple Beth Hillel at the URJ Biennial.  He serves as president of Beth Hillel’s social action committee He plans to attend Harvard University in the fall as a NROTC scholarship recipient.
