Rabbi Philip and Mrs. Ruth Lazowski

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Hebrew High School of New England will honor Rabbi Philip and Mrs. Ruth Lazowski, at their annual scholarship dinner on June 1. The dinner will be held at the Emanuel Synagogue in West Hartford, Conn.
For more than 50 years, the Lazowskis have been among the most loved and esteemed couples in the Jewish community. Survivors of the Holocaust, the Lazowskis began their Jewish communal journey together in 1955. Rabbi Lazowski, a graduate of Yeshiva University and Brooklyn College, received an Honorary Doctorate from the Jewish Theological Seminary and is a member of the Rabbinical Assembly. He served as Rabbi at Congregation Beth Shalom from 1955-1969 and then became the spiritual leader of Beth Hillel Synagogue from 1969-2000 when he retired from the pulpit. That same year he was appointed State Senate Chaplain. He serves as Chaplain for the Hartford Police Department and as Chaplain for the Institute of Living.
Ruth Lazowski attended UCONN and Boston Teachers College and taught Hebrew School for more than 30 years. They are the parents of three sons, three daughters-in-law, and seven grandchildren.
“The Hebrew High School of New England is delighted to honor the Lazowskis at this most auspicious time as we settle into our beautiful new building across from the Mandell JCC and the Zachs Family Campus,” said Ann Pava and Loren Gelber, the event’s co-chairs. “Now more than ever, more and more students from a wide array of religious and educational backgrounds are choosing HHNE. The Hebrew High School of New England is proving to be an entity that is transforming Jewish life in the region.
