Experiencing Shavuot in West Hartford!

Last week, grades K – 5 of the Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Hartford (SSDS) spent the day with TEVA educators from the Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center in Falls Village learning about the holiday of Shavuot in multisensory and experiential ways. Over the course of the afternoon, they acted out and improvised the story of Ruth and Naomi, and learned about leket (leaving the droppings for the poor to harvest) and pe’ah (leaving the corners of your fields un-harvested). They then separated the wheat from the chaff and ground their wheat berries into flour. Finally, the students baked pita and ate it with their homemade butter. The outing was sponsored by David and Hillary Silver of West Hartford in memory of their son, Joshua, who was a student at SSDS.
