GREENWICH – Rabbi Jodie Gerson has been selected to serve as interim rabbi at Greenwich Reform Synagogue (GRS), it was announced recently by the synagogue’s co-president, Wendy Schreiber. Gerson will assume her two-year post on July 10.
“[Rabbi Gerson] best suits the needs of GRS as we move into our new home,” Schreiber wrote in a letter to congregants, referring to the imminent completion of the congregation’s new Cos Cob building.
A graduate of Harvard Divinity School, from which she received a Master of Theological Studies degree, Gerson received her ordination from Hebrew Union College in New York City. She has served as a Hillel rabbi at Yale University, New York University and the University of Vermont, and has held rabbinical positions in San Diego, California, Montreal, Canada, and Boulder, Colorado. An avid writer, her work is regularly featured in The Forward, Huffington Post, the Harvard Divinity Bulletin, and on the websites MyJewishLearning.com and Jewcy.com.
“I’m thrilled to be coming back to the East Coast, and especially to Greenwich Reform Synagogue,” said Gerson, who is referred to by congregants as ‘Rabbi Jordie.’
“Rabbi Sklarz and the GRS congregation have built an incredible community – one that I feel blessed to join. The beauty of our new building is rivaled only by the hearts of GRS’ committed congregants, whose ahavat yisrael – love of and commitment to the people of Israel – is a true inspiration and model for all American-Jewish communities. With such strong roots, I believe our potential to be a center for Reform Jewish life and learning in southwestern Connecticut and beyond is truly boundless,” she said. “In the coming years, GRS will grow in numbers and in scope of programs, bringing transformative, relevant, and above all, meaningful Jewish life to a whole new generation.”
