Hundreds attended the Community One performance of A Jew Grows in Brooklyn at the Shubert Theatre on Oct. 25. It was a spectacular event and the performance was terrific. The event raised $554,000, including 24 new endowments for Perpetual Annual Campaign Endowment (PACE). David Beckerman’s generous matching challenge on the night of the event was successfully met and exceeded our goal. PACE is a permanent fund established in your name. This restricted fund, created to endow your gift to the Jewish Federation Annual Campaign, allows your lifelong investment in your community to continue, providing help when and where it is needed, indefinitely. Your PACE fund can secure the future of our Jewish community. If you want to learn more, please contact Sydney Perry (203) 387-2424 x302 or Lisa Stanger (203) 387-2424 x382.

Spend This Purim in Morocco

In March 2015, the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven is celebrating Purim in Morocco.

MoroccoMorocco is one of the most diverse countries in Africa, with high mountains, sweeping desert, rugged coastline, and the winding alleyways of ancient medina cities and souqs. Close to Europe but a world away in lifestyle and atmosphere, Morocco has long enticed travelers. The old cities (medinas) of the imperial capitals like Fez and Marrakech are intense, sensual places, where daily life pushes through narrow streets and cool palaces hide behind mysterious portals. The Sahara desert is endless sand and sky, uncomplicated but powerful. Somewhere between the extremes are the earthy kasbahs, direct and formidable. With so much contrast, a week or two in Morocco can feel like a trip around the world and back!

Visit the exotic cities of this beautiful, temperate country where Jews have lived for 2,000 years. Experience the culture of the Sephardic Jewish life. In the 1940s, there were over 250,000 Jews in Morocco; today that number is between 2,000 and 2,500. Despite this, the community remains vibrant and strongly identifies as Jews. The Jewish Federations of North American, together with our overseas partners the JDC (American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee) and World ORT provide educational programs and social service assistance to what remains of the Jewish community in Morocco.

Experience the important work of the Federation system and JDC.

The deadline to join the Mission to Morocco is December 1, 2014.

March 3-11 itinerary:
• Purim celebration with Marrakech Jewish community.
• Shabbat with Casablanca Jewish community.
• High level briefings with Moroccan Jewish community leaders.
• Tours of Moroccan life and culture (Jewish and non-Jewish) in Casablanca, Meknes, Rabat, Fes, Marrakech, the Atlas Mountains and more.

The cost of the trip will be $3,200 per person; airfare not included and based on double occupancy. To participate in this mission you will need to make a minimum commitment of $500 to the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven’s 2015 Annual Campaign. For more information, contact Lisa Stanger: lstanger@jewishnewhaven.org, (203) 387-2424 x382.

The JCC is Going Green

The JCC of Greater New Haven is going green. In the next few weeks, the JCC will be starting the first stages of a solar power covered parking project that will provide the building with nearly 50 percent of the yearly electrical needs.

The solar panels will sit on a parking structure that will offer members more than 300 covered parking spaces, providing shade in the summer and protection from inclement winter weather. Additionally, the structure has an environmental impact estimated to reduce 603 tons of carbon dioxide annually, 12,060 tons over 20 years, and removing 131 vehicles from the road annually.

This project is entirely funded by the State of Connecticut through the Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority, Connecticut’s green bank.

The JCC is committed to sustainability and to finding more ways to promote the use of alternative energy. Creating these carports and using the available space for the installation of solar panels supports that commitment.
