HARTFORD – The Connecticut Probate Assembly elected Judge Sydney W. Elkin of West Hartford as president-judge during the assembly’s annual meeting on Monday, April 7. The Probate Assembly, which comprises the 54 judges who preside over the Probate Courts, has met annually for more than 60 years. The assembly’s purpose is to seek to improve the administration of justice and achieve uniform practice and procedures throughout the Probate Courts.
“I am honored and humbled to have been chosen as president-judge of this esteemed, hardworking group of 54 judges,” said Elkin of the West Hartford Probate Court. He will assume the one-year position immediately.
Elkin has been a member of the Probate Assembly since his election as judge of the West Hartford Court in January 2002 and last year served as the assembly’s first vice president-judge. He is a current or former member of several assembly committees, including the legislative, education, ad hoc court security and ad hoc bylaws committees.
His ties to the legal community are extensive. He is a magistrate for the Superior Court and president of the Connecticut Magistrates Association. He has served as an assistant state’s attorney, corporation counsel for the Town of West Hartford and hearing officer for the Department of Motor Vehicles. He also maintains a private law practice focused on commercial and residential real estate, zoning and small business matters. An active member of the community, he is also past president of the Greater Hartford Jaycees, Probus Club of Greater Hartford and the Emanuel Synagogue.
