State hosts Holocaust commemoration at State Capitol

HARTFORD – “Stories of Freedom: What You Do Matters” was the theme of the 32nd Annual State of Connecticut Holocaust Commemoration, held in the state senate chambers of the state Capitol in Hartford on Friday, April 16.

The commemoration was sponsored by the Jewish Federation Association of Connecticut (JFACT) and the Jewish Federation of Eastern Connecticut, in coordination with the state’s eight other Jewish Federations, the regional Anti-Defamation League, the Christian Conference of Connecticut and the state of Connecticut.
The moving tribute was highlighted by the keynote address of survivor Ray Gawendo, a resident of Norwich who was living in the Vilna Ghetto when she was deported to the Klooga Slave Work camp in Estonia, as well as teachers and students from several area schools, who discussed the school-wide program, “Encountering Survivors: Lessons From the Holocaust.” This year, for the first time, the United States Coast Guard Academy joined the Jewish War Veterans Hartford-Laurel Post #45 and Russian War veterans in the posting of the colors.
