Mandell JCC Launches Emergency Elevator Campaign
The Mandell Jewish Community Center in West Hartford has launched an emergency campaign to replace an outdated, original elevator that is no longer operational. The campaign aims to raise $150, 000 by early summer in order to install a new elevator which will transport seniors, parents with young children, and those with physical disabilities. As of this writing, the JCC had raised close to $50,000.
Closing the elevator has presented the Mandell JCC with other challenges, according to Joyce Mandell, a past president of the JCC. “We have shuffled rooms and facilities, moving groups able to use the stairs to the upstairs rooms and moving other programs onto the lower level of the JCC,” says Mandell. “These temporary solutions will work through the summer, but must be replaced by a new elevator by the time we come to our busy fall. Our major priorities, safety and accessibility, remain at the top of our list.”
