Limor Shefer of Southington has been appointed director of the religious school of Congregation Kol Ami in Cheshire.

Born and raised in Bat Yam, Israel, Shefer served in the Israel Defense Forces during the Gulf War and was recognized for performance in computer graphic skills. At the age of 16, she won the Israeli National Championship for roller-skating and ice-skating, and later earned a coaching certificate from Vingait Institute in those sports. In 1991, she joined the professional ice skating show “Holiday on Ice,” and performed with the company on a world tour. She arrived in the United States in 1994 and began coaching ice-skating in various rinks throughout Connecticut. She competed in the U.S. Open Challenge Cup and became a member of the Professional Skating Association of the United States.

At the same time, Shefer began teaching in synagogue religious schools.  Until her appointment as Kol Ami’s religious school director, she was a teacher at the synagogue’s religious school and at Ezra Academy in Woodbridge, teaching third and fourth graders Hebrew reading and writing, prayers, Jewish holidays and customs, and Israeli culture and other Judaic subjects. She has also prepared students for their bar/bat mitzvah services.

Previously, Shefer also served as drama director for the New Haven Jewish Community Center summer camp and as athletic director for the Woodbridge Recreational Camp.

“The Kol Ami community and I have been working very closely to create a new and exciting program; as well as music, family and community events, cooking, and art.  I am honored to become religious school director,” she said.
