Monroe Allen Sherrow, 67, veteran of the Vietnam War, a patriotic American with a deep civic awareness, died peacefully at the State Veterans Hospital in Rocky Hill where he lived and was well-cared for in the last few years of his life. Monroe was born and grew up in Hartford and West Hartford. He was the son of the late Samuel and Miriam (Driesen) Sherrow, owners of Sherrow’s Textiles, where he learned the trade of drapery installation and later had his own business. While attending the University of Hartford, Monroe became inspired by events of the day. When drafted into the army, he served valiantly in the Vietnam War. Upon his return he became an involved leader in patriotic activities and the Connecticut political arena. He was a committed life member in the Jewish War Veterans and served as a post commander. He also was a life member of the VFW and the American Legion. He leaves his beloved and devoted wife, Olivia Coburn Sherrow of South Glastonbury; and his children with his first wife, Doris Sherrow Heidenis of Portland, Esther Sherrow Wilson and her husband, Richard of Paris, France, Sarah J. Sherrow of Cambridge, Mass., and Samuel J. Sherrow  and his fiancée, Athena Wang of Denver, Colo.; and his three dear grandchildren, Oscar, Maxine and Elroy Wilson of Paris, France. He also leaves his sisters, Joan (Melvin) Stein, Florence (Malcolm) Graff and Rochelle (David) Fierston, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 5, followed by interment in State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown with full military honors.
