SCHWARTZMAN

Esther Schwartzman, 91, of New Haven, formerly of Greenfield, Mass., died July 26. She was the widow of Rabbi Solomon U. Schwartzman. She was a member of Westville Synagogue. Born in Munkacs, Czechoslovakia (now Mukachevo, Ukraine), she was the daughter of Usher Zelig and Leah (Weingarten) Fried. A Holocaust survivor, she grew up in Munkacs in the heart of the Carpathian Mountain region. She was imprisoned as a teenager along with her family at Auschwitz and subsequent in forced labor camps culminated in the Death March from the Brahnau camp from which she escaped. She and two older sisters were the only survivors of their immediate family, losing their parents and a younger brother and sister.  She is survived by her children, Shelley Bulman of New York, N.Y., Sarah Pollack and her husband Yoram of Israel, Hayim Schwartzman and his wife Anne of Portsmouth N.H., Jerry Schwartzman of Charlotte NC, and Judy Ostroff and her husband Dan of Israel; 13 grandchildren, and 39 great-grandchildren.
