(JNS.org) The IDF said it intercepted and destroyed a Syrian spy drone over Israel’s Golan Heights region Saturday.
The drone was reportedly intercepted with a Patriot missile over the demilitarized zone in between Israel and Syria.
“It was a reconnaissance UAV and not an attack UAV, and we are checking whether there is any connection to Iran and Hezbollah,” IDF Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus told Reuters.
Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said in a statement, “We hold the Syrian regime responsible for any firing or breach of sovereignty and call on it to hold back all players active in its territory.”
The incident follows several previous instances in which Israel used Patriot missiles to intercept drones from Syria, including in September 2017, April 2016 and July 2016.
The U.S., Russia and Jordan on Saturday reportedly reached a cease-fire deal for southern Syria that will establish a buffer zone near Israel’s border, where Iran and its Lebanese terror proxy Hezbollah will not be allowed to operate.
