WEST HARTFORD – On Monday, May 15, more than 600 people attended a community conversation on the topic of mental illness, organized by Jewish Family Services of Greater Hartford (JFS) and Tara’s Closet. The forum, entitled “Embracing Possibility for Mental Health Awareness: A Conversation About Compassion & Education,” featured as guest speaker best-selling author and NBC’s Today Show contributing correspondent Jenna Bush Hager.
“It is through this critical conversation, the power of compassion and community support as well as educational opportunities that we can elevate the conversation about mental health. This event meant some much to me and I loved being part of it,” said Hager.
The event also included a panel of experts and community members who are combatting misconceptions surrounding mental illness. They included Hartford Hospital/Institute of Living Assistant Medical Director Dr. Evan Fox, local author Karin Stahl, and Huffington Post contributor/blogger Risa Sugarman, who shared stories about what it’s like to live life with a mental illness.
“Mental illness does not discriminate,” said Fox. “Recognizing the symptoms, as well as where to find help, is fundamental. Showing our commitment to ensure those who need help have access to the support, acceptance, and resources they deserve is essential.”
