All that jazz in New London

Students at Solomon Schechter Academy (SSA) in New London enjoyed the sounds of jazz when jazz pianist and composer Ian Frenkel, jazz pianist and composer and jazz bassist William Morrison stopped by for the Jewish day school for a visit on March 21. Frenkel and Morrison played several jazz selections for the students, taught them about the basic music concepts of melody, form, harmony, and improvisation, and inspired them by sharing their own personal stories of how they got involved in jazz music. In preparation for the program, music teacher Karen Navarre, taught a jazz unit, exposing the children to jazz greats such as Scott Joplin and Dave Brubeck.
