The Cantors Assembly, the Conservative movement’s professional association of hazzanim, has announced publication of Shira Chadasha: Music of the Independent Minyan, the first-ever anthology of music from 21st century Jewish communities, including independent minyanim, renewal, and post-denominational synagogues.
The collection includes almost 200 melodies from more than two dozen composers, prayer leaders, and nigun-masters including Shir Yaakov Feit, Rabbi Lizzi Heydmann (Mishkan Chicago), Daphna Rosenberg (Nava Tehilah), Hillel Tigay (IKAR), and Joey Weisenberg. It is rounded out with a wealth of Chassidic nigunim, as well as a number of melodies from the musical “rebbe,” Shlomo Carlebach. The melodies gathered in this book were mostly unpublished until now, discovered only through the experience of praying at an independent minyan or similar setting, or through recordings.
The book is available online via the Cantors Assembly website at www.cantors.org.
