New Haven JCC’s Beckerman Lecture Series tackles hot topics

WOODBRIDGE – The JCC of Greater New Haven has announced the line-up of topics and speakers for its annual spring lecture series to be held April through June. All lectures are held at 7:30 p.m. at the JCC of Greater New Haven.

Tuesday, April 14: Sexual Misconduct on College Campuses.

In light of recent media attention and legislative changes to the ways in which universities address rape and sexual assault, sex and consent have become hotly contested topics in America today. This discussion will highlight the ways these issues are dealt with on college campuses and across the nation. Panelists are Emily Bazelon, journalist and staff writer for the New York Times Magazine, and a senior research fellow at Yale Law School; Joseph Fischel of the Yale Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program; and Yale Law student Alexandra Brodsky.

Thursday, May 14: “What the %@&*! Happened to Comics?”

Art Spiegelman, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning and critically acclaimed Maus graphic novels, presents a chronological tour of the evolution of comics, all the while explaining the value of this medium and why it should not be ignored. Known as the “father of the modern graphic novel,” Spiegelman’s influential graphic novels Maus I and Maus II document a Holocaust survivor’s story as retold with inventive animal personifications of the figures involved in World War II and Hitler’s genocide of European Jews.

Thursday, June 25: Mortified Nation.

Experience a special screening of the popular documentary Mortified Nation, which chronicles people around the country who read from their old diaries to audiences of complete strangers. Film director, Mike Mayer offers a Q&A after the screening and several locals will share excerpts of their own diaries.

The JCC of Greater New Haven is located at 360 Amity Rd., Woodbridge. Tickets for each event are $12 for JCC members and $15 for non-members; $30 for the series for JCC members and $36 for non-members. Tickets are available on jccnh.org.
