Sylvia Goodman, 98, of Groton and formerly of West Hartford, passed away on Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at Fairview Nursing Home in Groton. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Sept. 20, 1915, daughter of the late Chaim and Anna (Cohen) Goldberg, she was raised in Mineola, Long Island and had lived in Far Rockaway, N.Y. for over 30 years before moving to West Hartford in 1991. Sylvia retired from the Long Island Lighting Company as an office manager after more than 28 years of service. She loved swimming, going to the beach, and had belonged to a beach club and swam three times a week into her 90s. Her love of the water extended into fishing which she inherited from her dad who was an avid fisherman. Sylvia enjoyed traveling and spent time each year in Miami Beach, Fla. Most of all, she will be remembered as a strong-minded, independent woman who loved being with her family, especially her grandchildren. She leaves her daughter, Harriet Grayson and her husband Arthur of Westerly, R.I.; two grandchildren, Stacey Leigh Grayson of Pittsburgh, Penn., and Rebecca Zipporah Ocque, Md. and her husband Andrew “Jake” Ocque of Pittsburgh, Penn.; and a sister, Gladys Shapiro of Delray Beach, Fla. She was predeceased by a brother, Isadore Goldberg, and two sisters, Esther Brenoff and Minnie Goldberg. Services were held on August 22, 2014 at the Carmon Funeral Home and at Hebrew Benevolent Association Cemetery, Preston.
