COLUMBUS, Ohio – Aaron Kogan of New Haven has been named the National Fencing Champion in the 15-and-under age group, after winning the 2014 USA Fencing National Championships held June 22-July 3 in Columbus, Ohio.

According to the USA Fencing Association, more than 4,000 athletes from throughout the U.S. and around the world competed in the 2014 Fencing National Championships and July North American Cup, the world’s largest fencing tournament. Over the course of 12 days, the athletes, who qualified for the tournament by placing at the top in state or regional competitions, fenced in both individual and team competitions in all three weapons: epee, foil and sabre.

Following a competition that lasted more than nine hours, the 14-year-old Kogan bested a competitive pool of 190 of the top epee fencers in his age group to become the 2014 Men’s Epee National Champion. His gold medal also earned him an “A” classification, the highest rating given to USA fencers, and brought up his national rank to fifth in the U.S.

In addition to winning the championship in his age group, Kogan earned 14th place in the next age group, age 17 and under Men’s Epee, a competition featuring 250 national and international competitors.

A graduate of Ezra Academy in Woodbridge, Kogan is a rising sophomore at the Hopkins School, where he is a member of the varsity fencing team.
