The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which in October spoke out against “hurtful and offensive names, mascots and logos” in sports, has signed a letter generated by the Oneida Indian Nation and the National Congress of American Indians, advocating for changing the name of the Washington Redskins.
“Your NFL should not be a place where any person is expected to sit by in silence while their heritage is so casually disgraced and condemned by this racial slur,” said the letter, which was sent Tuesday, June 10 to close to 3,000 professional football players.
A majority of the signatories to the letter are Native American groups, with a number of African-American and gay umbrella groups also among those who signed. The ADL was the only Jewish group of 77 organizations to sign the letter.
