SEGAL

Frances (Dembo) Segal, 104, of Manchester, died April 11. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Jacob Alden Segal. Born in Danielson, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Bella (Herman) Dembo. She graduated from Norwich Free Academy at the age of 16 in 1926 and earned a degree in Business from Bryant College in 1928. She ran her husband’s office for many years and served as president of Temple Beth Sholom’s Sisterhood. She later enrolled in Manchester Community College and at the age of 85 became the oldest student at Manchester Community College to earn an Associate Degree. She received the President’s Award as well as the Trustees Merit Award. She continued to audit courses until age 103, and while a member of a senior citizen’s writing group she authored three books: Reflections of a 98-Year-Old Late Bloomer; My First 100 Years; and My Family Then and Now. She is survived by two sons, Dr. Robert J. Segal and his wife, Barbara, of Lakewood Ranch, Fla., and Joseph F. Segal and his wife, Barbara, of East Lyme; grandchildren, Rebecca, Mark, Jennifer, and Robin; great-grandchildren, Spencer, Mitchell, Maya and Lila; and a niece, Deb Dembo of Chester. She was predeceased by a brother, Dr. Joseph C. Dembo. Memorial contributions may be made to the Frances Segal Book Award Scholarship for Single Working Mothers at Manchester Community College.
