Summer Artist-in-Residence program focuses on Jewish entertainment

SOUTHBURY — The Jewish Federation of Western Connecticut and the Heritage Village Jewish Culture Club are partnering this summer to host an Artist-in-Residence program highlighting Jewish entertainment. The two-day program featuring award-winning singer, songwriter, guitarist and lecturer Laura Wetzler will be held July 22 and 23, 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Federation, 444 Main St. North in Southbury.

Wetzler, who has recorded five music CDs of original and traditional music, will present three multi-media lectures on the history of American entertainment, culminating in a concert.

On July 22, Wetzler will discuss “Stars of Yiddish Stage and Screen,” followed by “Fabulous Showbiz Divas: The Nice Jewish Girls,” celebrating the artistry of American Jewish performers Fanny Brice, Sophie Tucker, Barbra Streisand and Bette Midler. On July 23, her topic will be “Jewish Broadway Musicals.”

Wetzler closes the series with her concert, “A World of Jewish Music & Great American Favorites,” a musical celebration featuring original music, Jewish favorites, and the great classics of American song.
