WEST HARTFORD — The Maurice Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies of the University of Hartford presented awards and distributed more than $30,000 in scholarship to students and teachers at a reception held on campus on Monday, April 29. Among those receiving awards were two graduating seniors from the University of Hartford, whose awards were made possible by the Fishman Family Project: Elissa Katz, who was named a Fishman Scholar in American Jewish History, and Rachel Rosenberg, who was named a Fishman Scholar in Jewish Communal Leadership. Both women are Jewish studies majors; Katz is a joint major in education.
Commenting on the Fishman Family Project, Prof. Avinoam Patt of the Greenberg Center said, “The goals of the project are to spur a passion in college students and youth in the community to better understand the American Jewish past, to teach this history to American Jewish youth, and to in turn seek professional careers in Jewish communal service that are vitally needed now to strengthen the American Jewish future. By promoting the study of the Jewish experience in America, the Fishman Family Project in American Jewish history and Jewish communal leadership helps lay the foundation for a strong American Jewish future in our community and beyond.”
