GREENWICH — Temple Sholom of Greenwich honored five congregants for their contribution to synagogue life at the shul’s Annual Spring Gala, held on Sunday, May 5.

Joan and Bob Mann of Greenwich received Temple Sholom’s Lifetime Achievement Award; Jennifer Weinstein of Greenwich and Willow Oberweger of Riverside received the Individuals of Valor Award, Anshei Chayil; and Mallory Madfes of Greenwich received the Distinctive Service Award.

Active members for nearly 40 years, the Manns both have served on Temple Sholom’s Board of Trustees and as officers. Joan Mann founded the original Sisterhood Shabbat service at Temple Sholom, and annually conducts the Mincha service on Yom Kippur.  In addition to their dedication to the Temple, the Manns are active leaders in the Greenwich Jewish community.  Bob Mann is a founding member of the Greenwich Jewish Federation, and has served as the agency’s president and is currently a Board member. An ardent supporter of Israel, he has led community missions to Israel and volunteered on an Israeli army base numerous times, including during the intifada and both the Gulf and Lebanon Wars.  Joan Mann is a founding member of Jewish Family Services of Greenwich, where she is an honorary Board member.  In addition, she is past president of Greenwich Jewish Federation and continues as an active Board member.

Jennifer Weinstein and Willow Oberweger served as co-presidents of the Selma Maisel Nursery School Parents Association at Temple Sholom from 2009 – 2011.  As co-presidents, they oversaw all parent-led activities including the book fair, grade-level and school-wide Mom’s Night Out events and the Nursery School gala, to name a few.  They were also instrumental in organizing class parents for the Chanukah party and Passover Seder.

Greenwich High School senior Mallory Madfes has been an active volunteer and youth group leader

at Temple Sholom since her bat mitzvah. She was instrumental in launching the synagogue’s Judah chapter of BBYO this past fall and has been active in recruiting members and building enthusiasm for the group. This past January, she was elected neisiyah (president) by her peers.

An outstanding student, Madfes is an accomplished coxswain, and a prize-winning scientist.
