AVON – Judy G. Singer of West Hartford and Audra Weisel of Bristol have been named recipients of the Hannah G. Solomon Woman of the Year Award by the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), Greater Hartford Section.
NCJW Director of Operations Sammie Moshenberg and Honorary National President (2005-2008) Phyllis Snyder presented the award to the two women on Sunday, Sept. 20 at a donor buffet brunch in Avon.
Both Singer and Wiesel served as NCJW Connecticut State Public Affairs chairwomen.
During her tenure, Singer worked to ban drive-through mastectomies and birth deliveries, defeat mergers of Catholic hospital practices with public hospitals, defeat late term abortions, support same sex partners and ultimately same sex marriage bills. At present, Singer is the chairman of the Jewish Community Relations Council for the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford.
Weisel advocated for reproductive choice, emergency contraception for rape victims, comprehensive sex education, genocide education, paid sick leave and marriage equality. Weisel spearheaded the Greater Hartford Section Teen Battle Chef Program at Billings Forge Community Work, which empowers youth with culinary skills as well as leadership, team building, tolerance and cultural awareness.
