Helping America’s Heroes

Norman Hanenbaum (left), commander of the Jewish War Veterans Department of Connecticut (JWV), and past Department Commander Jerry Blum, distributed 1,000 pairs of socks to homeless and needy veterans at CT Stand Down, an annual event that gives veterans in need the opportunity to obtain health care, legal aide, food and clothing and other services. Approximately 1400 veterans showed up at the event, which was held on the ground of the State Veterans Home in Rocky Hill in September.
While Hanenbaum and Blum manned the JWV booth, other JWV members were also on hand to volunteer in various ways. They included: Past JWV Department Commanders Jim Tierney and Elliott Donn, Post #45
Co-Commanders Joseph Fleischmann and Marvin Goldfarb, Senior Vice-Commander Marty Levitz, distinguished member Roman Luftglass, past Auxiliary President Elissa Donn, and Joanne Blum, senior vice president of JWV’s National Ladies Auxiliary. Blum has been a nurse at the Home’s health care facility for nearly 30 years and has volunteered at every Stand Down event since it’s inception 20 years ago.
