As the Ledger went to press on Tuesday, Adam Greenberg was getting set to make a one-time at-bat appearance for the Miami Marlins in their game against the New York Mets. The 31-year old Guilford native, was an outfielder for the Chicago Cubs in 2005 when he was hit in the head on the first pitch of his only plate appearance, ending his Major League career. Following a successful online petition drive in 2012, the Miami Marlins signed Greenberg to a one-day contract as a goodwill gesture. The son of Wendy and Mark Greenberg, Adam is a graduate of Guilford High School.
He was the first player in Connecticut history to be named to four all-state teams. He also played for the Bridgeport Bluefish for three years.
