Rabbi Robert Orkand, Joyce and Ken Backman, and Gayle Weinstein will be honored at the Connecticut Regional Office of the Anti-Defamation League 2012 Upper Fairfield County Award Reception on Sunday, Oct. 28 in Westport.
Westport residents Joyce and Ken Backman will receive ADL’s Distinguished Community Leadership Award. Dr. Ken Backman is founder of Allergy and Asthma Care of Fairfield County, LLC. He currently serves as co-chair of the ADL Westport Committee, a member of the ADL Executive Board, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Juvenile Bipolar Research Foundation. Joyce Backman is a registered nurse who assists her husband in his practice. An active member of Hadassah, she serves on the organization’s Connecticut Executive Board and in January will begin her third non-consecutive term as Westport Chapter president.
Gayle Weinstein of Westport will also receive ADL’s Distinguished Community Leadership Award. She has served as Weston’s First Selectman since 2009, and has been on Weston’s Board of Selectmen since 2007. She is vice chair of Connecticut Council of Municipalities’ Task Force on Children, Youth and Families and is a board member of the UJA-Federation of Westport-Weston-Wilton-Norwalk.
After 30 years at Temple Israel in Westport, Rabbi Robert Orkand will retire in June. A former recipient of the ADL’s Distinguished Community Leadership Award, chair of ADL’s Interfaith Committee and ADL Regional Board member, he will receive a Special Recognition Award for his service to the ADL, his synagogue and the community.
