Hummus – in a multitude of incarnations – was the only item on the menu at the University of Connecticut first ever “Hummus Experience” cook-off, supported by the Sabra Dipping Company and UConn Dining Services and held in the school’s Student Union Ballroom on Wednesday, Sept. 12. More than 400 hummus lovers and others were on hand to cheer on teams of students as they diced, sliced and blended together a plethora of vegetables and spices in their effort to create the most flavorful hummus. Those in attendance sampled the teams’ offerings, then voted on their favorite hummus; and the five teams with the most votes were then judged by an esteemed panel that included, among others, UConn Hillel Executive Director Gary Wolff and Linda Levine, a member of the UConn Hillel Board of Directors. And the 2012 Hummus Experience winner is…Hummm City – made up of team members Erica Lieb, Lauren Bent, Shane Milan, and Taylor Fitzpatrick (all student employees of the Ludewick Visitor Center). Hummm City was awarded a year’s supply of Sabra hummus. And the team’s winning recipe will be served to all students in Galfenbien Commons Dining Hall.
