YOM HASHOAH EVENTS

The following is a list of programs marking Yom Hashoah – Holocaust Memorial Day – which is observed on  Sunday, May 1.

SATURDAY, APRIL 30
Simsbury – 34 – reading of the names of victims of the Holocaust, sponsored by the Farmington Valley Jewish Congregation-Emek Shalom, on the steps of Eno Hall, beginning at 6 p.m.  Those who wish to participate will be assigned 10-15 minute time periods; call Rabbi Herman (860) 651-8576 or Jerry Hirsch (860) 658-7951.

SUNDAY, MAY 1
Greenwich – 29th Annual Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Commemoration with keynote speaker Lola (Elfenbein) Margulies, a survivor; sponsored by UJA Federation of Greenwich, 5 p.m.; at Greenwich Reform Synagogue, 257 Stanwich Rd., (203) 552-1818.  FREE

West Hartford – Annual Yom Hashoah Holocaust Commemoration featuring keynote speaker Martin Schiller, author of the memoir “Bread, Butter and Sugar: A Boy’s Journey Through the Holocaust and Postwar Europe;” candle procession of survivors and their families; sponsored by the Mandell JCC and JFACT Voices of Hope; 7 p.m.; at Beth El Temple, 2626 Albany Ave., (860) 236-4571.  FREE

MONDAY, MAY 2
Stamford – “The Legacy of Hope” Community-wide Holocaust Remembrance Day, featuring survivors Judith Altmann and Al Linder, sponsored by United Jewish Federation of Greater Stamford, New Canaan and Darien in collaboration with area synagogues and chavurot; 7:30 p.m.; at Temple Beth El, 350 Roxbury Rd., (203) 322-6901. WEDNESDAY, MAY 4
Stamford –Yom Hashoah presentation with guest speakers Ann Freed, whose mother was reunited with her brother after 60 years through the efforts of the Red Cross Holocaust tracing service; and David Meltzer sponsored by the American Red Cross Connecticut Region, 7:30 p.m., at Temple Beth El, 350 Roxbury Rd., Lyn.McCarthy@ctredcross.org.  FREE (registration required)

Fairfield – Town of Fairfield 28th Holocaust Commemorationfeaturing guest speaker Mike Hirsch, a survivor of Auschwitz, Birchenau, Bergen-Belsen and a Nazi death March, and teen participants in the “Adopt-A-Survivor” program; 7:30 p.m.; at First Church Congregational, 148 Beach Rd.,  (203) 581-0395.

THURSDAY, MAY 5
Woodbridge – Stamford –Yom Hashoah presentation with guest speakers Ann Freed, whose mother was reunited with her brother after 60 years through the efforts of the Red Cross Holocaust tracing service; 7:30 p.m., at the Greater New Haven JCC, 360 Amity Rd., Laura.Campbell@actredcross.org.  FREE (registration required)

FRIDAY, MAY 6
Hamden – Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremony with keynote speaker is Jim Messina, a religion and history teacher at St. Martin DePorres Academy in New Haven, who attended a three-week seminar sponsored by the American Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors; light lunch to follow;   hosted by the town of Hamden,  12 noon; Thornton Wilder Hall, Miller Library Complex.

Southport – Holocaust Commemoration program featuring trailer for the new film “Alice: Dancing Under the Gallows”; Alice is the oldest survivor of the Holocaust and the second oldest person living in London, England. She was a renowned concert pianist and a close friend of Franz Kafka; Congregation for Humanistic Judaism; 7:30 p.m.;  at the Southport Congregational Church, 524 Pequot Ave., (203) 226-5451
