The Six Day War June 5 – 10, 1967

On Saturday, June 5, Israel marks the 43rd anniversary of the start of the Six-Day War, in which the tiny Jewish state fought off attacks by the neighboring states of Egypt, Jordan, and Syria – supported by the Arab states of Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria who contributed troops and arms.

At the war’s end, Israel had gained control of the Sinai Peninsula, the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights. The results of the war affect the geopolitics of the region to this day. This world famous photo taken by David Rubinger, pictures IDF paratroopers Zion Karasanti, Yitzhak Yifat and Haim Oshri at the Western Wall, shortly after Israel’s capture of the Old City of Jerusalem.
