Author Joshua Safran will discuss his critically-acclaimed memoir, Free Spirit: Growing Up On the Road and Off the Grid, on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at the YWCA Greenwich, in a talk co-hosted by the YWCA and JCC Greenwich. Free Spirit is the harrowing story of Safran’s real-life survival against all odds; it tells about how he overcame adversity, reconnected to his Jewish heritage, became a lawyer, and went from survivor to advocate.

free spiritSafran is an author, attorney, occasional rabbi, and nationally recognized advocate for survivors of domestic violence and the wrongfully imprisoned. Born to a coven of lesbian witches in a Haight-Ashbury commune, Safran spent his childhood hitchhiking and surviving the elements with a violent alcoholic stepfather from El Salvador. Eventually – and amazingly – he found his way to Orthodox Judaism and law school. His compelling and inspirational true tale is the subject of the award-winning documentary, Crime After Crime, which premiered at Sundance and on the Oprah Winfrey Network.

The YWCA Greenwich is located at 259 E. Putnam Ave, Greenwich. Tickets are $18. To register visit www.JCCGreenwich.org or (203) 552-1818.
